2: It's Our First Week in Kindergarten!

"I've always loved the first day of school. Firsts are best because they are beginnings."

-Jenny Han

It was a pleasure to get to know all the children in their first two days of Kindergarten 1 and 2. What stood out for me the most upon interacting with them are the varied characteristics and interests of each child, and their role in the synergy and dynamics of the class. One thing is for sure: the possibilities are endless with our Kindergarteners. I am excited to get to know each one of them deeper so that we can provide the best environment that will hone their full potential.

Our goal for the first week of school is to bridge friendships and foster camaraderie amongst the students, and of course, to get them comfortable in the school environment and the daily routines. The children had numerous opportunities to familiarize themselves with their classroom environment, and to choose toys and activities that that they would like to focus on.

To help the children ease into the daily routines, we've started teaching them songs, games, and movement sequences to make the repetition more fun and meaningful for them. The Kindergarten 2 children enjoyed learning about the ukulele -- my favorite instrument to use in class -- and look forward to our singing sessions within the day. I hope to teach them some of my favorite songs in the future!

Literacy plays a big part in each child's growth and as early as now, we hope to promote the value of stories and develop a love for books. Aside from our weekly Library classes, we have daily storytelling blocks where the kids get to experience books through read-alouds and different hands-on activities to support their understanding of the stories. This week, to connect with the first week of school, we chose the following books by fantastic authors:

David Goes to School by David Shannon

The Night Before Kindergarten by Natasha Wing

Who Will Be My Teacher This Year? by David Biedrzycki

We also had some fun and took photos to mark the beginning of the year and to use these at the end of Kindergarten to check how much we've grown.
